Liverpool are considering a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, according to The Telegraph.

The club’s new manager Oliver Glasner is already confronted with the challenge of retaining key players ahead of the summer transfer window.

The daily newspaper claims that the Reds “could face a fight with fierce rivals Manchester United over Guehi should the club’s proposed sporting director Dan Ashworth revive his interest in the England international.”

It is believed that Ashworth was interested in signing Guehi for Newcastle and is an admirer of the player.

Guehi joined Palace in 2021 for £18 million from Chelsea. While there is no apparent straight buy-back agreement on the player, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are thought to have a sell-on clause and a matching option, giving them the opportunity to enter the race to sign him if they choose to do so.

The Blues are likely to be in the market for a central defender this summer as Thiago Silva is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

However, the London club may face challenges in attracting top talent as they are unlikely to offer Champions League football, a prospect that both Liverpool and possibly Manchester United can provide.

Guehi is under contract with Palace until 2026, and there seems to be little likelihood of the 23-year-old signing a new deal, implying that his market value will be at its peak this summer.

He has made 26 appearances and provided one assist for the Eagles across all competitions this campaign.

In addition to the potential departure of Guehi, Palace are also facing a challenge in retaining Michael Olise, who is reportedly a target for Manchester United and was subject to a bid from Chelsea last year.

Palace’s best chance of retaining Olise, who is believed to have a release clause in his contract, could hinge on concerns from other clubs about committing a substantial fee for him at the end of an injury-hit season.

Eberechi Eze, who has been hampered by a series of injuries this season, penned a new contract with Palace in November of last year. However, this may not deter interest from larger clubs looking to target him.
