Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director Simon Rolfes is hopeful that Xabi Alonso will remain at the club next season.

Despite speculation surrounding Alonso’s potential move to Liverpool, Rolfes remains optimistic about retaining the talented manager’s services, emphasising the stability and continuity he brings to Bayer Leverkusen’s managerial helm.

Alonso is top of the Reds’ list to replace Jurgen Klopp who will step down as the Reds boss at the end of the current season.

The 42-year-old signed a new contract with Leverkusen in the summer, which is set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 campaign, however, it is understood that he reached a gentleman’s agreement with the club’s hierarchy, allowing him to depart for a top club like Liverpool.

Leverkusen have become a formidable team in Germany since Alonso took over last season and are currently top of the Bundesliga with 55 points.

They maintained their unbeaten streak in all competitions this season (won 27, drawn four) following their remarkable 3-0 win over defending champions Bayern Munich on Saturday.

After the sensational victory, Rolfes was asked about Alonso’s future and whether the Spaniard would remain at the club next season. He told SPORT1: “Yes, I’m sure.”

“One [reason] is the contract. The other thing is how comfortable he feels, the family, himself and that he knows what he has in the club.

“He also has a very good team, we will have a very good perspective next year and there’s no change in the team.

“We will definitely have a top team available next year. These are all points that – in addition to contracts – coaches like Xabi, but also players who [attract] interest, often stay with us.”

Alonso spent five successful years at Anfield as a player between 2004 and 2009, during which he secured victories in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Following his time with Liverpool, the former Spain international featured for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

He is also attracting interest from Chelsea who are reportedly looking to sack Mauricio Pochettino after a poor run of results.
