With the Premier League campaign kicking off in just one week, Liverpool still have plenty of business to do in the transfer window. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed today that Liverpool is in the market for more than just a midfielder, but centre backs too.

The need to strengthen the midfield is an area of priority for Jurgen Klopp having lost starting defensive midfielder Fabinho to Al Ittihad last week. However, it is not just the midfield department that the German manager has eyes on improving.

It has been long reported that Klopp has a left-sided centre-half right at the top of his wishlist, but who that could be is somewhat of a mystery. Klopp was reported to be a keen admirer of England U21 International Levi Colwill who has just penned a new seven-year deal at Chelsea.

Fabrizio Romano today revealed that despite missing out on Colwill, this will not distract Klopp in the pursuit of strengthening his defensive options for the upcoming season, with the focus expected to intensify once the deal for Romeo Lavia is completed.

Writing in his daily Substack briefing today Romano confirmed the side’s intentions in the market “Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back this summer but it has to be a very good option, They are not “forced” to sign for that position; it’s just in case they find the best opportunity.

“They wanted Levi Colwill but it was always impossible as Chelsea considered him not for sale since day one. Liverpool are currently busy with the Lavia deal, but after that, we will see.”
