Liverpool have entered the race to sign Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to SportBILD’s Christian Falk.

Falk claims that the Reds will encounter strong competition in their pursuit of the 28-year-old, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain also expressing interest.

Kimmich’s current contract is set to expire in 2025, and as of now, there have been no discussions regarding a contract extension between the player and the club.

This lack of negotiations raises the possibility that Kimmich may be made available for transfer in the summer, particularly as Thomas Tuchel looks to reshape his team.

The summer window serves as Bayern Munich’s last opportunity to capitalise on one of their key assets or face the risk of losing him on a free transfer in the next 18 months.

Falk said: “Thiago is always injured at Liverpool and his contract is running out, [Jordan] Henderson has left, there is a bit of space in midfield and Jurgen Klopp of course knows how important Kimmich is.

‘‘[Jorg] Schmadtke, the sporting director [at Liverpool], has good connections in the Bundesliga. So, Klopp is also now in the race for Kimmich.”

Kimmich was previously linked with a potential move to Anfield last summer but ultimately chose to remain at the Allianz Arena.

The German international made the switch to Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in 2015, amassing an impressive track record of 370 appearances, 41 goals, and 100 assists across all competitions.

During his time at the club, Kimmich has played a pivotal role in Bayern’s success, contributing significantly to their victories in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, DFL-Supercup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.

Last season, he delivered 18 goal contributions in 47 appearances, helping Bayern secure their 10th consecutive league title by defeating Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the campaign.

Kimmich has made 23 appearances, scoring one goal, and providing six assists across all competitions this season as Bayern Munich currently sit in second place, trailing leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen by just four points.

Despite recent speculation about his future, it is widely believed that Kimmich has no intentions of departing from Bayern.

However, his status has garnered attention in the past few months, particularly after Thomas Tuchel expressed his desire for a robust number six in the squad.

“Joshua is the strategic guy who would like to do everything and could also do everything in principle,” the former Chelsea boss said at the beginning of the season.

“He brings a lot of quality to the team, but he still doesn’t have the DNA of a defensive six. He likes to roam freely, he tries to help everywhere and likes to be involved everywhere.”

Bayern were keen on signing Fulham defensive midfielder Palhinha late last summer, only for the deal to fall through as Marco Silva’s side were unable to bring anyone in.

It is unknown if Bayern will bring in a new midfielder to make way for Kimmich to leave in the summer.
