Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has indicated that the club is in contention with Liverpool to secure the services of Xabi Alonso as their next manager.

Alonso, a former player for both Bayern and Liverpool, is currently on the verge of leading Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever German Bundesliga title.

With both Bayern Munich and Liverpool seeking new managerial appointments this summer, Alonso’s potential availability has sparked interest from both clubs.

“Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on it,” Hoeness told Ran Sport.

“He’s proven that he can be a coach for the big time. There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don’t have a job or who are on sabbatical.

“It’s not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things.”

Thomas Tuchel is set to depart from Bayern Munich at the end of the current season, coinciding with Jurgen Klopp’s announcement to step down as manager of Liverpool back in January.

Despite Klopp’s pending exit, Liverpool currently stand in second place in the Premier League, tied on points with league leaders Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti, the current manager of Real Madrid, recently extended his contract with the Spanish club until 2026, as confirmed in December.

Notably, Xabi Alonso spent five years as a player at Real Madrid, sandwiched between his tenures at Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Regarding Alonso’s current situation, his contract with Bayer Leverkusen is also set to run until 2026.
