Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy has urged his old side to complete a move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer.

The Reds are still in the market for a defensive midfielder despite the signing of Wataru Endo from Stuttgart on a four-year deal. Liverpool have parted way with five midfielders including Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Jurgen Klopp is keen on revamping his midfield and has already added Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister to his squad. It is believed the Merseysiders would make at least one more midfield addition before the window closes on September 1.

Several midfielders have been linked with a move to Anfield, however, Phillips has emerged as a potential target. He is yet to feature for Man City this season after being an unused substitute in each of the club’s four games.

Missing out on both Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo could see Liverpool consider a move for the England international.

“It would depend on the price. If it was a half price of what they got for him, maybe it would make sense,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“But there is a stumbling block in terms of the perception. I think if Liverpool were seen to be getting a player at City who couldn’t get a kick, I’m not sure how that would go down.

“But I like him, I think he’s a talent. I wouldn’t be that disappointed if Liverpool got him. I think he is a talent and he would be great cover or make that position his own as they only have Endo really who can play that position.”
