Liverpool reclaimed their position at the summit of the Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday.
A crowd of 59,896 fervent supporters witnessed an impressive display as the Reds bounced back to winning ways at Anfield.
Goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez ensured a swift return to the top spot in the league, reclaiming their position from Manchester City, who briefly overtook them with a lunchtime victory over Everton.
Diogo Jota opened the scoring in the 31st minute, setting the stage for an exhilarating match. However, Burnley managed to equalise just before halftime, with Dara O’Shea finding the net.
The second half saw a rapid response from Liverpool, with Luis Diaz swiftly regaining the lead. The match was effectively sealed in the late stages as Darwin Nunez secured the victory.
Liverpool are now two points ahead of Arsenal and Man City who have a game in hand. For Burnley, they suffered their 17th defeat of the campaign and are 19th in the standings.
Joe Redmond (The TurfCast Podcast) is here to provide an insightful breakdown of the match.
Liverpool had a sluggish start to the game but Burnley couldn’t take full advantage of it and subsequently lost at Anfield. What are your general thoughts on the game?
Redmond: I thought we (Burnley) shot ourselves in the foot tbh. Like you say Burnley had the better of the opening exchanges but couldn’t make it count, then we gave away a sloppy goal through a goalkeeping error – something we have seen a lot at Burnley this season tbh. We managed to get back into it and went in at 1-1 for HT and nobody could have said we didn’t deserve it tbh. We then miss two big chances at 1-1 to go in front before giving away another sloppy goal. We were the victims of our own downfall again today but if I’m being honest it’s the story of our season.
Burnley are 19th in the league table and suffered their 17th defeat of the campaign. How would you rate their chances of survival?
Redmond: There is no chance we stay in the Premier League now, and I’ve felt we’re down since late October now. To put it in perspective, Burnley have won three games in 24 attempts this season. For us to stay up we probably need to win a minimum of seven from our next fourteen games. That would be a hell of a turnaround and one we have shown no signs of doing.
Burnley come up against Arsenal next weekend. A must-win for Vincent Kompany?
Redmond: I don’t think you can ever say a game against title challengers for us is a must-win. We had two must-win games at home recently against Luton and Fulham – we drew them both. They’re the kind of games that have sealed our fate.
Can Liverpool win this season’s Premier League in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club?
Redmond: They can yes, but I don’t think they will. I know Liverpool lost to Arsenal the other weekend but I do still feel that Liverpool are the second-best team in the league and will finish in that position. Unfortunately for Liverpool, City are too strong and their juggernaut has already fired up and looks like it will get them over the line.
