Liverpool continued their impressive start to the 2023/24 Premier League season with yet another comeback victory, this time against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
The Reds secured a convincing 3-1 win over Gary O’Neil’s side at Molineux Stadium, extending their unbeaten run to 16 games in the top-flight.
Wolves’ Hwang Hee-chan gave his team an early lead in the 7th minute of the game, but Cody Gakpo’s close-range finish from a Mohamed Salah assist quickly brought Liverpool level.
Salah then turned provider again, setting up Andy Robertson to coolly slot home an 85th-minute effort before an own goal by Hugo Bueno sealed the Reds’ fourth consecutive victory.
In this article, Ben, the host of The Anfield Talk, delves into Liverpool’s match against Wolves, providing insights and analysis of the game.
Another comeback win for Liverpool at Wolves. What do you make of the game, especially the first-half performance?
Ben: I remember telling you in the preview that it would be tougher than people think, but I didn’t expect the first half to be that bad. There are many factors as to why that could have been… 12:30 pm after an international break, a makeshift starting 11, etc. but ultimately we were just poor. We kept losing the ball in dangerous areas & looked lifeless going forward. The first half was very worrying. But Klopp deserves a lot of credit for making the changes when we needed them, which resulted in a full turnaround. It was a game of two halves, and the 2nd half was brilliant. So we got there in the end.
20-year-old academy graduate Jarell Quansah made his full debut for the Reds. Do you think he can challenge for a first-team spot this campaign?
Ben: Quansah was fantastic & has been whenever he’s played so far really even going back to pre-season. We all said that we needed another CB in the summer transfer window, but maybe Klopp & the coaches just didn’t see an option out there that was good value, so they opted to give the chances to Quansah. He is very talented and will be fully aware of his position. He will be rotational in the premier league, whilst playing the cups and Europa League. He was fantastic yesterday, which is really encouraging moving forward.
Liverpool have picked up 13 points from 15 but have conceded in four league games. A concern for Jurgen Klopp?
Ben: I’m not sure if it’s a concern because we have played some really strong sides so far. Of course, there are things that we need to work harder on to stop leaking chances, and I’m sure that they’ll come.
Games are coming thick and fast. Next up is a Europa League tie against LASK on Thursday. Any changes you would want Klopp to make?
Ben: I would expect a whole lot of changes to be honest. It will be an exciting watch because we will finally get to see Ryan Gravenberch make his full Liverpool debut, whilst the likes of Harvey Elliott, Stefan Bajcetic & Ben Doak will all be in contention to start the game. I’d like to see Quansah keep his place in the starting 11 & give other players a chance to prove themselves. We have West Ham on the sunday so we can’t risk anybody.
