The Reds found themselves on the wrong side of fate, as a legitimate goal was incorrectly ruled out. To make matters worse, they were reduced to nine players, and in the 96th minute, Joel Matip conceded an unfortunate own goal, sealing a 2-1 victory for Spurs.

The loss saw Liverpool drop to fourth place in the Premier League table after just seven games played this season. This unexpected setback has ignited discussions among fans and pundits alike about the team’s performance and the controversial decisions that impacted the outcome of the high-stakes clash.

In this analysis, Bence Bocsák (@BenBocsak) delves into the performances of Liverpool and the officials in what turned out to be a crucial match with significant implications for the Premier League standings.

First of all, how did you feel after the game with emotions still high?

Bence: It was a real tough one to take, everything had gone against Liverpool. But strangely I felt pride. The reaction from the players after the game said it all: This is Liverpool, and even when everything is against us, we won’t give up.

Liverpool received two red cards and yet produced such an impressive display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. What are some of the positives?

Bence: Many positives. Tottenham has been one of the best sides in the PL so far this season, to be able to hold them for so long, even with nine men is a huge credit to this new set of players. I thought Szoboszlai was excellent as usual, but also Endo came in really well and defensively VVD seemed back to his best.

Are the Reds challengers for the league title this season based on their blistering start to the season?

Bence: Absolutely, you can’t rule out Liverpool for the title, only 2 points behind City at the moment, it’s still there for the taking.

What’s your general overview of VAR and do you think it’s time for the Premier League to introduce semi-automatic offsides?

Bence: I think VAR has been a positive change for the game. In general, the offside checks have worked well and made that side of the game impartial, however, that error to not overturn Diaz’s goal is a huge one. The key is having competent people in charge of the technology.

Liverpool take on Union Saint-Gilloise in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. How many changes would you make?

Bence: Well I think for starters, Jota and Jones will probably start. I’d drop Szobo, maybe bring in Trent for Gomez and Konate for either Matip or VVD. Quansah probably deserves a start as well. Endo, Jones, and Gravenberch would make an interesting midfield. Up top, I think Doak definitely deserves another start, Nunez should be fresh, and as I mentioned it’ll probably be Jota on the left because of his red card suspension in the league.
