Manchester United and Liverpool are both interested in Archie Gray from Leeds United. Liverpool’s interest in the player is long-standing, dating back to November when it was first reported by the Daily Mail. United have now joined the battle for the wonderkid, but there is a growing feeling Liverpool have the upper hand.

As United saw with Kalvin Phillips, convincing a player to join the club is difficult due to the rivalry with Leeds. Phillips went to the blue side of Manchester instead, and Liverpool may fancy their chances when it comes to this deal for the same reason.

The current price being reported for Gray is a fee of around £ 50 million, eight more than City paid for Kalvin Phillips last season. Gray has become a huge part of the Leeds team this season at just 17 years old, showcasing his quality.

United’s interest was reported by Stretford Trends, stating that United were monitoring a new midfielder due to the fact they will not be signing Sofyan Amrabat permanently. Amrabat signed from Fiorentina on loan in the summer, but the Manchester club are unlikely to make the deal permanent.

Liverpool have been following the player for some time, and have been reported to be plotting a summer move. Leeds may be in a weaker position to try and keep the player if they fail to earn promotion to the Premier League this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to sign a specialist six in the middle of the park, having planned to spend big on one in the summer, just missing out on the signing of Moises Caicedo to Chelsea.

Neither club has made a bid or approach as of yet, but the interest is certainly there from both clubs. Liverpool will feel the more confident of the two, but Manchester United are unlikely to give up easily under the new guidance of INEOS.

A transfer battle to keep an eye on!
