Liverpool appear to be leading Manchester United in the race to secure the services of OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, according to Nice Matin.

Todibo was expected to depart from the Ligue 1 side during the January transfer window, however, recent indications suggest that he will remain with the club at least until the end of the current season.

The 24-year-old has caught the attention of several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United and Tottenham who have already secured the signing of Romania defender Radu Dragusin from Italian side Genoa for £25m.

According to the daily French newspaper, Todibo may consider leaving Nice in the summer, with Liverpool emerging as the front-runners for his signature.

The report suggests that Todibo shares a close bond with his France international teammate Ibrahima Konate, and the prospect of a move to Anfield holds particular appeal for him.

It’s worth noting that Manchester United had attempted to sign the Frenchman during the previous summer transfer window, but the deal ultimately fell through.

Speaking to L’Equipe on the failed transfer, Todibo said as quoted by Talksport: “I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t have the thought to tell myself that perhaps I should play in a ‘top club’ to increase my chances [of playing for France], but there are also guarantees when playing at Nice.

“I experienced it differently from my previous situations in my career. My thinking was much more in-depth, thoughtful. I didn’t want to make a mistake in my choice. I remained very calm.

“Reflection is much more important than when I started. I’m waiting to be presented with the complete project.

“What is expected of me? Why am I coming? You shouldn’t arrive at a club like that. I know what I have at Nice. Why go into the unknown? So, everything must be clear. My first transfer, I was 18 years old. The thinking was not as thorough.”

Todibo is widely recognised as one of the best center-backs in French football, making him a potential long-term successor for Joel Matip, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Liverpool’s defensive lineup currently comprises Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Joe Gomez as the primary reliable central defenders, along with academy graduate Jarell Quansah.

Jurgen Klopp may seek to reinforce his defensive options, and Todibo emerges as an excellent fit for the club.

With 14 appearances in Ligue 1 for Nice this season, Todibo has showcased his defensive prowess and even contributed with one assist, underlining his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
