Liverpool are eyeing a summer move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips as a possible replacement for Al-Ittihad-bound Fabinho, according to Sky Sports.

Fabinho has given permission to undergo his medical with the Saudi Pro League side. The 29-year-old was omitted from Jurgen Klopp’s squad for their pre-season training camp in Germany after receiving an official bid of £40m from Al Ittihad on Friday night.

The Brazil international moved to Anfield from Monaco in 2018 and has emerged as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world. He has racked up 219 appearances, scored 11 times, and recorded 10 assists across all competitions.

He has helped Klopp’s side clinch the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup, Super Cup, Emirates FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.

Liverpool are keen on bolstering their midfield despite bringing in Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai and have targeted several players including Phillips, Romeo Lavia and Ryan Gravenberch, and Sofyan Amrabat.

Phillips is yet to make a meaningful impact at City after struggling for regular playing time in his debut season. He featured in only 21 games across all competitions, failing to score or assist throughout the campaign as Pep Guardiola’s side won the treble.

The England midfielder wants to stay at Etihad but could be sold this summer with several clubs interested in signing him including West Hahm United and Newcastle United.

Phillips was first linked with a move to Liverpool last summer but he opted to join Man City instead.
