Darwin Nunez has withdrawn from Uruguay duty after sustaining a hamstring issue during Liverpool’s 4-3 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Despite the setback, there is optimism that Nunez could recover in time for Liverpool’s Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion at Anfield on March 31.

The striker, who recently returned from a similar injury earlier this month against Nottingham Forest, played the full 120 minutes at Old Trafford as Jurgen Klopp’s side exited the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage.

Nunez’s withdrawal from international duty is seen as a precautionary measure by Liverpool, who anticipate his return for the crucial fixture against Brighton.

This game presents an opportunity for the hosts to claim the top spot in the Premier League ahead of Arsenal’s visit to Manchester City later that day.

Having been in fine form, Nunez has netted nine goals for Liverpool in 2024.

Unfortunately, Nunez will miss Uruguay’s friendly against Senegal in France on March 26, as well as an exhibition match with Basque in Spain three days earlier.

Liverpool are currently dealing with a considerable injury list, with key players such as Alisson Becker, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Ben Doak sidelined.

However, there is some positive news as Ibrahima Konate has joined up with the France squad after recovering from a muscle injury that kept him out of the last three matches.

In addition, Luis Diaz has joined up with the Colombia squad despite concerns raised by Klopp following Sunday’s defeat to United.

The winger may feature in Colombia’s upcoming fixtures against Spain at West Ham’s London Stadium and against Romania at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano.
