Gareth Southgate has named his England squad for the upcoming international fixtures and it contains two Manchester United players.

The call that may come as a surprise to some is Harry Maguire‘s selection. The 30-year-old was a regular in the Red Devils side under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Ragnick but things are different under Erik Ten Hag.

Initially, the defender was used ahead of Raphael Varane in the starting lineup under the Dutchman. Still, after the 4-0 thrashing to Brentford early last season, he has been out of the team and the presence of Lisandro Martinez has made things even more difficult.

Maguire was even left on the bench when Varane was injured in the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest. Victor Lindelof was brought on instead to replace him.

However, the England manager still clearly has huge faith in him after the job he has done for the country in big tournaments. The Three Lions reached the finals of the Euros and the quarter and semi-finals of the World Cup with him in defence.

Marcus Rashford had spent some time out of the England team in the 21/22 season but regained his place in the previous campaign. It is no surprise that he gets the callup, after scoring 17 goals in last season’s Premier League.

England will face Ukraine and Scotland on the 9th and 12th of September, respectively.
