Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has lauded compatriot Darwin Nunez, hailing him as one of the best strikers in the world following his decisive goal against Nottingham Forest.

Nunez secured a remarkable 99th-minute winner in Saturday’s Premier League game, securing crucial three points for Liverpool and preserving their position at the top of the league table.

Suarez, who graced Anfield between 2011 and 2014, expressed his admiration for Nunez after the triumphant performance.

Despite facing criticism for perceived shortcomings and occasional profligacy in front of goal during his Liverpool tenure, Nunez has managed to find the back of the net 14 times this season and provided 11 assists.

His contributions have proven instrumental in Liverpool’s pursuit of an unprecedented quadruple.

Suarez, who bagged a brace for Inter Miami in their 5-0 win over Orlando City said: “Yes I saw [the goal]. I am so happy for Liverpool and I am so happy for Darwin.

“He is one of the best strikers in the world today.”

Jurgen Klopp playfully remarked that Nottingham Forest’s teasing chants aimed at Nunez hilariously backfired, following the striker’s decisive performance that led Liverpool to a last-minute victory.

Forest’s fans sang: “You’re just a s*** Andy Carroll,” in reference to the former Liverpool and Newcastle striker who struggled to shine during his own time at Anfield between 2011 and 2013.

Klopp’s jest suggests that the attempt to mock Nunez may have inadvertently motivated him to shine on the pitch.

“I would not sing a song like that,” the German said. “I would try not to wind Darwin up.

“The goal was super deserved for him. They can sing it when Darwin responds like that.”
