Wataru Endo has emerged as the latest injury concern for Liverpool, leaving Wembley in a cast and on crutches.
Despite playing the full 120 minutes in the Reds’ 1-0 Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea on Sunday, the Japan captain sustained an ankle injury during a tussle with Moises Caicedo in the second half.
The injury woes for Liverpool continue to mount, with the possibility of being without as many as 13 first-team players for Wednesday’s FA Cup clash against Southampton.
This unfortunate situation comes on the heels of their recent triumph in the League Cup, highlighting the challenges the team faces as they navigate through a spate of injuries.
Liverpool also suffered the loss of Ryan Gravenberch within the first half-hour of extra time during the victorious clash against the Londoners.
The Netherlands Under-21 international was also injured under the weight of a challenge from Caicedo, further compounding Liverpool’s injury concerns.
However, Jurgen Klopp is hopeful his injury is not too serious. He told Sky Sports: “I hope it’s not that bad. They did an X-ray, so it’s not broke but the ligaments got something and that’s how it is.”
Gravenberch and Endo will undergo assessment on Monday, with Klopp set to offer a more comprehensive update during his press conference on Tuesday.
This dire situation forced the German to turn to several Academy prospects during Sunday’s showpiece, with Jayden Danns, James McConnell, and Bobby Clark coming on after Conor Bradley started at right-back.
The lengthy list of unavailable first-team players includes Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Dominik Szoboszlai, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones, and Diogo Jota.
Stefan Bajcetic and Ben Doak are also sidelined, intensifying the challenges Liverpool face.
